(POST 34) - Planning - Directional Style

Is there a particular directing style you want to use?
Examples of directing styles:
  • Montage vs long shots where shots are longer and keeps the scene in deep focus which allows the audience to choose their points of emphasis. Also the mise-en-scene and the arrangement of the set is important in this directional style.
  • Hollywood style where the aim is to make the audience forget the medium of the film therefore they use shots and cuts in order to make the audience seem like there is no technique. Finally they like to keep the video having a natural look to it.
From this bit of research I think using a directional style can be helpful but at the same time as a pair I think we would use different parts of different styles so that we are using techniques that allow us to create exactly what we want therefore there is no particular style that we would want to use but we would consider using sections to create our own style to it.

Are there particular directors you are inspired by and want to integrate these styles into your
work? (eg- Hitchcock- suspense, Wes Anderson- characters centrally on screen, heavily
linked to photography, Edgar Wright- lots of close ups, short, sharp cuts etc.)
In past work we have recreated videos from Wes Anderson therefore from doing this we have a good
experience with his work therefore for what we want to produce I don't think short cuts would be appropriate
however with our plan the characters in the music video will be centralized so it is possible for us to use
his techniques but use different kinds of shots. With Edgar Wright I think we wouldn't try integrate his

ideas because I personally think that technique of close ups and sharp cuts would work better for an upbeat
song with a faster pace to it compared to our song choice. Finally using Hitchcock's technique of building
up suspense could be used in our music video because it would fit but we aren't looking to focus our
work around any particular person because we like to have our own element to our work.
Any inspiration from the director you previously researched and made a documentary about?
I done a documentary on Warren Fu and from this I have learnt a lot about the way he works. From the
videos I have watched about him he seems to have a fairly relaxed approach to filming which I think
as a pair works well for us. One thing that we have looked at is his illustration work which we might
use as inspiration for the music album cover because his drawings and illustrations looks very
professional therefore there is a chance we would use that as inspiration for our album cover.
