(POST 56) - Evaluation question 4

Arguably, the most important collective group of items in the production of media is the technologies that surround the production stages. It is crucial to have all of the correct forms of technology to be able to construct, research, plan and evaluate throughout the process. I believe the knowledge I have within technology that I have built up over the past few years of my life has given me an advantage throughout the production stages of the coursework. The combination of skills across my knowledge of technology, camerawork and editing have helped me to produce a much better post edit product.

Within both the construction of and researching into the product we are building up to produce there was a varied selection of technology that we used to better are research.

Firstly, we believed deciding on are target audience would be the best way to start out. We did so by creating a simple questionnaire on word in which we asked a range of age groups the same questions to determine the favourite music genre based on the varied age groups. We wanted to work on a music video which entailed the same genre as those in their late teens enjoyed listening to. This way we believed we could create the best possible final product as we would enjoy creating the music video a lot more for a song people are age can relate to. We then went on to film people of the same target audience and asked them what they believed makes up a successful music video. This was are first time in this years coursework filming any sort of material. We weren't worried about the location or longevity of the video as the most important factor was to build up enough research to eventually plan and produce the music video. The contribution of people's opinions aloud us to build up a broader picture on how we wanted to bring the music video to life. Obviously without the millions of pounds in budget like large scale music videos have we were going to have to work are way round the lack of substantial budgets such as these. We believed interviewing people gave us a great advantage when it came to planning the music video.

During the planning stages of the coursework we used YouTube thoroughly to help us grow are knowledge on music videos. As we had little experience on filming a music video prior to this years coursework it was important for us to grow are knowledge on what makes a successful music video. YouTube is a great platform for anyone to upload any type of video. Music artists use the platform to reach their audience through music videos. This made YouTube a perfect site for us to find professional music videos on and take inspiration from them to begin to make a thorough plan for our music video.

YouTube was great throughout the entirety of the research process. As soon as we finalised on which coursework brief to follow we began to look through not only professionally made videos but debatably more importantly student made videos. As mentioned above the difference ion budget hinders what you can possibly achieve when filming a music video so looking at student made videos allowed us to realise the real potential of what we could achieve.  I learned a lot about the popularity of different style videos - e.g. linear, videos with flashbacks etc - just from looking at the amount of views, the likes/dislike ratio and some of the top comments. This helped me learn more about my target audience, and what the public in general want and enjoy from a music video. Another great use of YouTube was to watch the meaning behind the lyrics. Something I wanted to achieve through the music video a storyline. I believe having a story allows you to connect with the viewer a lot more. Therefore, understanding the meaning behind the lyrics is important as you can create a much more in-depth video that connects the viewer to the music itself.

I also found that google was also a brilliant search engine to use to search for images, so during the research for my ancillary tasks I used google to look at and analyse different digipaks and magazine adverts that were professionally made, so that I could learn from them and get inspiration for my own. To get feedback on the ancillary tasks I sent them into facebook and snapchat group chats to get feedback from friends and family on how I could improve the ancillary tasks. This gave me the best chance to make the images appeal to the targeted audience.
